The Story:
On Trying to Make Friends & Not Be a Weirdo

Have you ever started your life over in a new place? Or just started a part of it over, like at a new school or job. And you’re like, “This is cool… I wish I had friends here.”Or maybe you have lots of friends, they’re just all from pretty much the same place, like your women's Bible study and your Thursday community group and your discipleship meeting with the pastor's wife and your 3 other Christian book studies on the side. (Or maybe that’s just me.) And you’re like, “This is cool… I feel like something’s off."OR maybe you have lots of friends in lots of places, but you want to take these friendships deeper than a mutual love for tacos and "The Bachelor". You already talk to them about essential oils and hot yoga and Meetups. And you’re like, “This is cool… But it needs more purpose.” You want the things that make your life better on a heart, soul, and mind scale to be a part of your friends' lives, too.Next week, we are leading our church community group(/small group/life group) on mission by tapping in to each of these areas. Each person will pair up with one other person in the group to host a “second-degree dinner” at either a home or a restaurant. Each host will invite one friend who (1) either doesn’t know Jesus or isn’t involved in church, and (2) the other host doesn’t know. Then the invitee will invite their own friend, whom no one else in the group knows. Make sense? I invite a friend, then that friend invites a friend. The other host does the same thing.Everyone comes to the dinner, knowing that the purpose is to get to know new people. And how do you get to know people? You ask a bunch of personal questions. To make it a little easier, this blog goes more in depth on what a second-degree dinner is and what kinds of questions can help lead to meaningful discussions. (Hint: What ours is NOT: a bait-and-switch approach to getting everyone there so we can do a flannelgraph Gospel presentation at the end.)

As a group, we are hoping not only to expand our friendship network, but also to make deep connections with people that can lead to sharing more than a meal: sharing life. Doing mission the way Jesus did it: at the dinner table. Please pray that God shows us whom to invite. Pray for spiritual protection over the hosts and the invited guests, that God will keep us from any sickness, conflict, accidents, worries, or doubts that would stand in the way of us coming or engaging well. Pray that we as hosts will show Jesus' love to our guests by making them feel welcome, showing genuine interest in their lives (even if they are different from ours), and being wise in navigating any potential spiritual conversations. Pray that we will be able to make lasting connections with those whom God is calling to Himself, and that we will get to be a part of that process, Lord-willing.
Money in the Bank
Our support is continuing to grow, praise God! Our next goal is to reach 75% of our monthly giving by March 31st, 2019. Like we have said before, we would love to have as many possible be a part of what we are doing, whether they can give 1 penny or $100. Our goal is to reach 200 monthly partners. Right now, we have 40.
