The Story
Going Out in Compassion
For the past year, our church (Trinity OC) as been partnering with a school in Orange called Skyview Elementary. This school specifically serves homeless families in Orange County by providing transportation to and from the school; connecting them to government assistance; providing items from their pantry (e.g., food and clothing); and, of course, educating them, especially working to fill in the knowledge gaps that exist due to so many missed days of school in the past.
(We wrote about Skyview and included a bunch of pictures in our December 2019 update. You can view that
.)
Since the pandemic started, the Skyview students have transitioned to remote learning and have not had the same access to the pantry resources provided by the school. We asked the school's community resource specialist if there was any way we could help the families during this time. She responded with enthusiasm.
There are 3 Skyview families who currently have the greatest need and would greatly appreciate any assistance Trinity can provide. These families share a similar story as they all lived a shelter and recently moved into places of their own. These families do not have very much and are starting from scratch in creating homes for themselves. Although these families have struggled especially during this unprecedented time, their children have done extremely well academically during distance learning, and the teachers and staff at Skyview know that this was also due to their parents' dedication to them. As always, the teachers and staff greatly appreciates the collaboration with Trinity in serving the vulnerable families of Skyview.
As a result, our Compassion Team organized a donation drive to help supply and deliver needed items, including clothing, furniture, and cleaning supplies. It was such an encouragement to see the generosity of our Trinity family at work in blessing these families!

Taking inventory of the donations

Our donation delivery teams
We wanted to share a story of one Trinity family's experience, written themselves.
When we first looked through the sign-ups, we noticed that one of the families had requested some large appliances for their new home. We watched for a few weeks, and after no one signed up to purchase them, we felt like those spots were meant for us, so we signed up to purchase a washer and dryer. We were able to source a set that was less than a year old, and when the seller heard that they were going to a recently un-homeless family, he gave back $100 of the purchase price and wanted it to go to the family instead. On our way to drop off the washer and dryer, we were texting with the wife/mom of the family. She wanted to know how much they would owe us for the appliances. When we explained that we didn't expect any remuneration, she was so thankful. She told us that money had been tight for their family as her husband is a commercial painter and has not had a lot of work recently; they had even asked one of their adult children to move in with them to help with the rent. At the family home, we found out that they had a washer and dryer which had been purchased previously, but a dishonest seller had sold them a set that didn't work. Unable to spend money on another set, they had been doing their laundry in their bathtub. We were able to get the new washer and dryer installed and running, and haul away the broken machines. As we gave them the $100 gift from the seller, they were nearly brought to tears. The swell of emotion was certainly not one-sided. At home, after a long day filled with extensive online marketplace messaging, false starts and dead ends, a trailer rental, and various trips around Orange County, we were tired but very much at peace. As we reflected on the gift we received through an opportunity to be generous, and how that generosity compelled a complete stranger to come alongside in blessing a family in need, we cried too.
